The less sweet, starchier alternative to the banana is the plantain. Plantains are a very important staple food for people in tropical nations, despite the fact that sweet bananas, also known as "dessert bananas," are far more well-liked in the United States and Europe.

Plantains are generally always boiled before eating, unlike dessert bananas. Don't be fooled by their banana-like appearance since they actually taste very bad raw.

In terms of calories, cooked plantains are relatively similar to potatoes nutritionally, but they have a higher concentration of some vitamins and minerals. They are a good source of fiber, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and B-6.
